About This Vacation
This custom Portugal vacation begins in Lisbon, where the rattle of vintage yellow trams and the soulful echoes of Fado music drift through the steep, tiled streets of Alfama. Tour the Sintra, National Palace, and historic city center and see why the locals call Lisbon the Queen of the Sea. Take the train north along the Atlantic coast toward Porto. Try some delicious petiscos and visit the ancient Port wine cellars lining the Douro River. Travel into the heart of the Douro Valley, where the path snakes through a landscape of steep, hand-carved stone terraces. Everything was well organized and enjoyable. The cost of transportation in the Douro Valley area was unexpectedly high due to the fact that there is no Uber options and taxis had to come from one of the two neighboring villages to service the hotel we were in. This is understandable given that the area is not overly developed yet (which was one of the appeals), but it would have been good to know this in advance.
